Book report: Safer Faiths, Safer Followers

The Revd Dr Tom Wilson, Director of St Philip’s Centre, has written a book titled
Safer Faiths, Safer Followers: Understanding and Countering Spiritual Abuse in Faith Communities.

Tom draws on extensive, interfaith research - including interviews, focus groups, and real-life case studies - to reveal how power dynamics and unchecked authority can harm vulnerable individuals.
Blending sociological insights with theological reflection, this essential resource equips clergy and safeguarding professionals with practical strategies and actionable tools - from sample sermons to community awareness sessions - to foster safer, more accountable religious environments.
Whether you’re leading a congregation or working within statutory agencies, Tom offers a vital roadmap to transform safeguarding practices and rebuild trust in spiritual leadership.

Speaking about the book, Tom said: “Many religious leaders, institutions, and organisations have betrayed people of faith. The damage is incalculable. Yet something must be done.

“My purpose in writing this short book is to provide opportunities for understanding and countering the reality of spiritual abuse. To both recognise the nature of the problem, and to come up with ways of responding that restore trust, rebuild shattered lives, and encourage hope.

“I hope the book will help people of different religious perspectives understand and respond to the reality of spiritual abuse.

"Anglican Christians will perhaps get the most from it because I am writing as an Anglican, with a personal and professional interest in safeguarding. But I believe there is plenty of interest for peoples of all religions and no religion, for those who have a professional interest in safeguarding and those with more general concerns.

“I have tried to make the book as practical as possible. It’s not necessarily an easy read, but hopefully a useful one.”
