The Cornerstone Team of Churches across Houghton, Thurnby and Stoughton held a day of prayer on Thursday marking Ascension Day and the start of Thy Kingdom Come.
The focus of prayer was on the church, evangelism and our Christian foundations of belonging, growing, multiplying, and serving.
A wide range of members from the different church families each set aside time during the day to pray and fast, with different people gathering online to pray together at three points during the day.
In the evening, members of the three churches gathered for an online service of prayer and praise where around 60 people met to sing, hear from the Bible and pray for the persecuted church, their local communities, and team of churches.
At 8pm, people paused to clap for carers. It was then that something rather special happened. During those couple of minutes one person told their neighbour that they were meeting to pray and God gave them an amazing opportunity when their neighbour asked them to pray for her daughter, a nurse who’d suddenly become unwell. Coming back together, they all prayed for this woman.
Revd Tom Devas, Associate Rector of the Cornerstone Team, said: “In a time when we can’t gather together in person it was a joy to still be able to connect with each other in a different way and to continue our pattern of regularly praying together.
“We were reminded once again of our need for God to be at work shaping us to be like Jesus and for the Holy Spirit to be leading us in the ordinary everyday moments and in our plans for church planting and building a local community café.”
