LEICESTERSHIRE HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST (Registered Charity No.233476) The 7th HISTORIC CHURCHES TOUR will take place on Saturday 18 June 10am – 5pm Led by Roger Willson. Experience Roger’s life-long passion for the history and architectural development of churches. Retired history master at Loughborough Grammar School he tutors and lectures for U3A. Honorary Archivist to Loughborough Parish Church. Former Chair, Leicester Stained Glass Appreciation Group. Own car travel, hopefully filling all seats to limit number of vehicles. Meet 10am inside The Church of Our Lady, Merevale, CV9 2LA. The Tour will continue to Fenny Drayton St Michael & All Angels, Dadlington St James, Stoke Golding St Margaret, Shenton St John, & Sutton Cheney St James. Lunch stop options: patronise the café by the canal near Stoke Golding, or the Dog & Hedgehog at Dadlington (prior booking needed for lunch) or take chairs and enjoy your own picnic by the cricket field at Dadlington. Merevale: Anglican Church originally the gatehouse to Cistercian Merevale Abbey (founded 1148) destroyed by Henry VIII. Important Jesse window. Fenny Drayton: Listed Grade II*. C12th core extended and remodelled in C14th. Significant C16th and C17th monuments. Late C19th East window. Fenny Drayton is the birthplace of Quakers’ Founder, George Fox whose father was Churchwarden. Dadlington: C13th Church altered, especially the chancel in 1886. On display are exhibits related to the Battle of Bosworth. Stoke Golding: A road sign declares Stoke Golding “The birthplace of the Tudor dynasty” following the famous battle fought near the village. Pevsner described the Grade I listed C13 Church ”one of the most beautiful in Leicestershire with lavishness worthy of a Cathedral.” Shenton: Church completed in 1861 on the site of a much older church. Sutton Cheney: Church contains memorial to Richard III and the fallen of the Battle of Bosworth 1485. Pre-tour booking essential --- maximum 30. £10 per person.
