Cathedral Square Story

The Cathedral Square is the expression of a new vision for outreach in Leicester and Leicestershire.

The Bishop of Leicester, Leicester Cathedral and Leicester Diocesan Board of Finance have committed themselves to work together

  • To purchase and develop the St Nicholas Building as a creative centre for life and education
  • To create a new cathedral square
  • To re-order Leicester Cathedral to support worship and mission fit for the 21st century
and so create a place of generous hospitality, transforming relationships and attentiveness to God at the heart of the diocese, city and county.

A new body, St. Martin's Cathedral Properties Ltd., has been brought into being to oversee the vision and its overworking.

The Trustees of SMCP Ltd. are The Bishop, The Dean, and the Chair of the Board of Finance. The Diocesan Secretary is secretary to the the trustees.

A Project Director has, Pete Hobson, began work in November 2008 as executive officer to the project.

Leicester Cathedral Square Project Group

The Project Group, chaired by Richard Atkinson (Archdeacon of Leicester) oversees the whole scheme on behalf of the partnership, working in support of the Project Director.

Sub groups and individuals are now working on:

  • Construction: especially the physical works needed within the St Nicholas building. Pick Everard are consultant architects to this aspect of the project..
  • Finance and fundraising: especially the development and refining of the business plan, and the pursuit of  grants and gifts.  None of this will be a direct charge on parish share.
  • Partners:
  • Music for Life Project: to develop (in collaboration with the national ‘Sing Up’ campaign) the musical resources of the cathedral to enable outreach to a wide range of schools and communities.
  • Cathedral Reordering: developing and implementing the brief to transform the interior of the cathedral and its ancillary spaces to enable the cathedral to operate as a place of calling, inclusion and transformation.
  • Cathedral Square: working to create a welcoming Cathedral Square of stunning quality as the worthy setting for a place of historical and spiritual significance.

The working groups have drawn in members with relevant expertise, and there is cross- representation to enable joined up planning.

The Development Steering Group has published a colour brochure (now revised and reprinted) and an artist’s impression of the new square, both available in Resources below.
