Sainsbury’s Supports Leicester FoodShare
Scores of people in need are benefiting
from support by three Sainsbury’s supermarkets in the city for Leicester
FoodShare.
Each day, on a rota basis, volunteers from one of the charitable groups
who are members of Leicester FoodShare, visit a Sainsbury’s store to
collect surplus fresh and perishable food. The food is then used by the
groups to provide meals or is distributed to individuals.
Leicester FoodShare is the title of a project launched earlier this year
by Rev Gill Jackson, Director of Social Responsibility for the Diocese
of Leicester. Gill linked the Diocese to FareShare, the national food
charity (www.fareshare.org.uk) and established a project where ambient
food is collected from the FareShare Birmingham depot and transported to
Leicester, for distribution (free of charge) to community groups that
meet the FareShare criteria of serving vulnerable people suffering from
food poverty.
Rev Gill Jackson said: "Sainsbury’s is a major supporter of FareShare
nationally. We are delighted that partnership is now replicated locally
to benefit people in Leicester.”
Tony Howe, Manager of Sainsbury’s at Belgrave Road, said: “We are
delighted that Sainsbury’s is helping to make such a positive
contribution to local community groups in Leicester. We are also assured
that by offering this service to the local community, we are working
towards reducing our landfill contribution – a topic that should be at
the forefront of every supermarket’s agenda.”
