Robin Rolls in as Youth Director


The first director level appointment associated with youth work in the Church of England has been announced, as the Diocese of Leicester has become the first Diocese nationally to take this innovative step.

Leicester Diocese has appointed Robin Rolls to the post, and he comes into the Diocese with a wide experience of youth work, both in the Church and the voluntary sector, having begun life as a volunteer youth worker some 20 years ago.

Rolls worked for seven years as Youthwork Adviser for Birmingham Diocese, where he served under the now Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, and was responsible for pioneering Birmingham Diocese's biggest ever mission to young people in 2005.

He was also the driving force behind the city's 're-united' youth event, which regularly drew crowds of over 700 young people to events in Birmingham, as well as a variety of other high profile events and developments.

His new role will involve implementing the Diocese's recent Young People 4 Life Strategy - a comprehensive review of youth work in the Diocese, written over a period of four months in 2006/7.

The strategy makes key recommendations including:

  • The recruitment and majority of funding for at least 10 full time youth workers into the Diocese within the next four years
  • Creating and sustaining a Bishop's Youth Council
  • Writing new training courses for youth work volunteers

A number of other measures aimed at raising the profile of young people, and involving them in decision making about the future of the Diocese, are also planned.

The Diocese has demonstrated its passion and commitment to youth work by investing almost £1.5 Million into Young People 4 Life over the next five years, and Robin is clearly delighted by his new role.

Upon appointment to the Diocese Robin said: "I'm thrilled to be offered the challenge of taking on this exciting role in this passionate and enthusiastic Diocese. The Diocese of Leicester has demonstrated their commitment to young people by creating a director level post, and I'm excited about being the one to fill it. There's much for us to do, but this is a great Diocese to be a part of, and the future potential for young people in our churches and elsewhere to be involved and make a difference is huge."
